Asbestos health and safety
Asbestos is the greatest single cause of work related deaths in the UK.  Every week 20 tradesmen die from asbestos related disease, in total there are around 4000 deaths per year related to asbestos.   Historically countless millions of tonnes of asbestos have been incorporated into buildings across the UK.   It can take from 15 -40 years from the time of exposure until the development of symptoms. Employers have a duty to protect their employees from exposure to Asbestos, and work with or involving Asbestos is controlled by law.

This section of the HSE website provides details of legislation controlling asbestos, and how to protect people from exposure to Asbestos.
